‘Always make the audience suffer as much as possible.’ So said renowned British film director Alfred Hitchcock. Although this statement by the influential filmmaker referred to something else, it still reminds me of the previous editions of the VERA Zienema Film Quiz, since the participating teams are seldom given an easy time by the quizmasters. At times you just feel the audience is on the verge of wailing out loud and gnashing their teeth. Nevertheless, we are on the verge of the twelfth edition, and movie lovers are once again welcome to team up and meet the challenge, with a veritable bounty of befitting prizes to be won.

So if you and your brethren in battle feel prepared to take on this challenge, thanks to your encyclopaedic knowledge of all things cinematic, whether recent hits, historic gems or prurient pulp from the past century of film, whether seen on the big screen or rented from a shop or streaming service …. in that case purchase your tickets soon to engage in competition with like-minded over-confident teams. However, you must be sure to expect the unexpected, since the carefully prepared questions very well could be somewhat at odds with the material being screened to introduce them. You may well balk at memorising all of IMDb, but it would be useful as the ultimate in preparation. In any case, it promises to be another nerve-wracking trip through the byways and highways of the marvellous world of movie history!
