“Time is an ocean, not a garden hose.”

Based on David Wong’s novel by the same name, ‘John Dies at the End’ is a movie that is virtually impossible to describe in a way that is coherent or understandable to anyone that has not seen it for themselves. The movie follows David and his friend John as they come into contact with a mysterious drug called Soy Sauce at a party. While some of the effects of the drug are temporary, others turn out to be permanent. After all, what has been seen cannot be unseen. ‘John Dies at the End’ combines comedy, horror, science fiction and absurdism into a non-linear narrative that continually subverts the expectations it creates.

Director Don Coscarelli once described Wong’s novel as a mash-up of Douglas Adams and Stephen King, and these influences can be found throughout the film as well. ‘John Dies at the End’ (which is not a spoiler) can turn from Lovecraftian horror to stoner comedy to hallucinogenic sci-fi quite easily and unpredictably.  Both inventive and disturbing, it is a film meant to be experienced, not explained. Perhaps at Zienema, Tuesday October 20th.
