A Hard Day’s Night movie follows The Beatles (George Harrison, Paul Mccartney, Ringo Starr & John Lennon) for several days while they try and deal with their new found fame in the first flush of Beatlemania. In this fictional account, director Richard Lester manages to combine the verité quality of French New Wave with the Beatles’s appreciation for absurdist humour. Some hail it as the “Citizen Kane of jukebox musicals”, while others consider it to be only “a series of music videos tied together by witty Liverpudlian banter”, but there’s no denying that The Beatles’s silver-screen debut paved the way for other musicals, music videos and rock-mockumentaries.
