Dutch minimalist composer Jozef van Wissem is a lute player who’s music moves between experimental, neoclassical, drone, and dark ambient soundscapes. Combining the ancient resonance of the lute with contemporary minimalism, he creates hypnotic compositions built on repetition, silence, and subtle tonal shifts. His music evokes a timeless atmosphere, balancing intimacy and austerity with a quietly haunting intensity. Drawing on early music traditions while challenging their conventions, van Wissem transforms the lute into an instrument of sonic exploration, where ritualistic patterns, raw textures, and a stark, cinematic sensibility converge.
