Detective Mark McPherson (Dana Andrews) investigates the murder of the charming and enchanting Laura Hunt (Gene Tierney). While searching for answers, he becomes completely captivated by her murder. Who did it? Is it the imperious, decadent dandy Waldo Lydecker? Is it Laura’s parasitic playboy fiancé, Shelby Carpenter? Her glamorous Aunt Ann Treadwell? Or loyal housekeeper, Bessie Clary?

Laura may be a classic whodunit, but remains incredibly unique with its mystical, dreamy atmosphere. The hypnotic music of David Raksin certainly contributes to this. In fact, the popularity that the ‘Laura theme’ has raised, made the whole concept of a ‘theme score’ a thing. You know, when a movie has a single musical theme, rather than multiple themes or leitmotifs. In short, this is an indispensable film for film music lovers.

Laura is the second film that Zienema will screen during our film noir theme month! After that, we move on to the fatalistic Detour (1945, Edgar G. Ulmer) and neo-noir A Land Imagined (2018, Siew Hua Yeo).
