One day inflatable doll Nozomi awakes from her rubbery existence. While her owner is away at work, she sets out to discover the human world. Nozomi gets a job a small video rental shop, where she slowly but surely begins to fall in love with her colleague. She starts to develop complex emotions which she has never had before. These start to lead to various bizarre yet interesting situations.

In Air Doll, the quest for love and security in modern-day Japan takes centre stage. Director Hirokazu Kore-eda (Shoplifters, Nobody Knows) is able to artfully switch around life and lifelessness, allowing us to ponder the vacuousness of modern society and our own existence.
