In Another Year, we follow the lives of a happily married couple for a year, somewhere in England. Tom is a geologist, while Mary is a care worker. As the seasons progress, we see friends and family come and go, all with their own troubles, dreams, faults and desires.

The film was directed by Mike Leigh, whose new feature Peterloo premièred earlier this month. Another Year is his poetic ode to leading a simple life. At first glance, there seems to be nothing special about Tom and Mary, yet they seem to grasp something that eludes those around them. Set against the travails of their friends and family, Tom and Mary’s happiness almost appears to be some form of radical resistance. It takes a daring soul to be satisfied.
