VERA Zienema doet weer mee aan de Dag van de Architectuur, dit jaar met een heftig realistische speelfilm over Johannesburg. Jerusalema is gebaseerd op het werkelijke levensverhaal van Lucky Kunene die in de jaren negentig alle vastgoed in Hillbrow Johannesburg overnam. De filmmaker zocht uit hoe dat in zijn werk ging en ontblootte een wijd verbreid afpersingssysteem in de vastgoedwereld. De film lijkt in meerdere opzichten op de Zuid-Afrikaanse versie van de TV-serie The Wire. Like it has for so many years up until now, VERA Zienema is participating in the annual Dag van de Architectuur (Architecture Day), and this year will be screening a raw and realistic movie about Johannesburg. Jerusalema is based on the true story of Lucky Kunene, who managed to lay hands on all the real estate in Hillbrow Johannesburg in the 1990s. The filmmaker investigated how he managed to achieve this and discovered a complicated web of blackmail and bribery in the murky world of land development and real estate. The film has many aspects that make it something of a South African version of the TV series The Wire. It provides a harrowing insight into the behind-the-scenes machinations of what appears to be a tranquil neighbourhood, but which is supported by the networks fostered by Kunene’s organisation.
