Twee koffers, een schooltas, een knuffel – dat is alles dat Nelly Senff en haar zoon Alexej meenemen als zij eind jaren ’70 uit de DDR vluchten om een nieuw leven in West-Duitsland te beginnen. De gedroomde nieuwe start wordt echter geen reis naar het paradijs; een vluchtelingenkamp, bureaucratische obstakels en vooral de bedreigingen van de geheime dienst maken het voor Nelly bijna onmogelijk om het verleden achter zich te laten. Een aangrijpend verhaal over de uitdagingen van een nieuw begin. De filmreeks Deutsches Kino is een initiatief van het Duitsland Instituut Amsterdam, het Goethe-Institut Niederlande, Filmhuis Lumen (Delft), Het Ketelhuis (Amsterdam) en VERA Zienema (Groningen). Hierin worden Duitse films centraal gesteld die in Nederland vooralsnog weinig aandacht hebben gekregen.
Two suitcases, a school bag and a stuffed toy – that's all Nelly Senff and her son Alexei are able to bring along when they flee East Germany in the late 1970s to begin a new life in West Germany. The new beginning in life she had dreamt of does not turn out to be paradise though: a refugee camp, bureaucratic obstacles and especially threats from the secret service make it impossible for Nelly to leave her old life and past behind her. It is a harrowing yet inspiring tale about new beginnings. Deutsches Kino is an initiative of the Duitsland Instituut Amsterdam, Goethe-Institut Niederlande, Filmhuis Lumen (Delft), Het Ketelhuis (Amsterdam) and VERA Zienema (Groningen). It is a movie programme screening special German movies and documentaries for the Dutch public, as yet somewhat overlooked.
