COME AND SEE! COME AND SEE! Schau Schau plays in their new formation in the basement bar! New formation you say? That’s right! The danceable postpunk with electronic ‘schwung’ of this Groninger band has become even more electronic today. Tjesse, the old drummer, has followed his passion and has now become the bassist of Magasin, a no-wave band that is definitely worth seeing live but I’m not writing a promo text for that now.

This meant that Schau Schau was drummerless and they told me, Tjesse was too good a match for the band so they decided to purchase a drum computer. Personally, I think it was a great choice, both practically and stylistically. It reminds me of when Joy Division stopped existing (you know why) and New Order started and the entire band discovered synths. The drummer of the band, Stephen Morris, was very fascinated by the fact that you could also place longer samples and create tight drum beats with the synths. Tighter drum beats than anyone could play. At one point he heard the first version of Blue Monday with electronic drum beat and thought: ‘’Shit, this is perfect. I’ve made myself unemployed.’’

Luckily, the drummer at Schau Schau is not unemployed, but rather a bass player and I can relate to that.

No one knows how long Schau Schau will stay in their ‘New Order’ era, but as long as no suitable drummer comes along, it will definitely remain that way. So behold, behold, Schau Schau is July 5th in our basement basement! | HILLE
