THE FOCUS ( Rei Hayama, 2013 ) & 2012 (Makino Takashi  / 2013) [scroll down for English text]

"By playing with images of the world around us, filtering and remaking them, breaking and eroding them into noise then reassembling them into moments of recognition and clarity, Makino is putting a spotlight on human perception itself.” (Adam Bambury, Brighton UK)

THE FOCUS ( Rei Hayama / 2013 / HD / 25min)

Makino: “I expect ‘2012’ can make free and new cosmos in each audience's mind.”

ENGLISH VERSION:

We have esteemed visitors from Japan at Vera Zienema tonight! Makino Takashi and his wife Rei Hayama are both filmmakers who travel to the outer limits of cinema and beyond. Their hypnotic visuals and enthralling soundscapes draw the viewer into a true ‘sensation flux’, aided by their original cardboard 3D glasses. You’ll never actually manage to find out whether what you saw was what was actually screened, or whether it was all a figment of your overwrought imagination, desperately trying to deal with information overload.

In these technological speedway days, such artists prove priceless, especially if they’re prepared to meet their audience afterwards to answer everyone’s burning questions.  One of the many festivals screening Makino’s work is the Ghent Film Festival in Belgium, where he is part of a programme for ‘contemporary audiovisual break-through talent’.

‘By playing with images of the world around us, filtering and remaking them, breaking and eroding them into noise then reassembling them into moments of recognition and clarity, Makino is putting a spotlight on human perception itself.’ (Adam Bambury, Brighton UK)

THE FOCUS ( Rei Hayama / 2013 / HD / 25min)
THE FOCUS is the most recent production by Rei Hayama, in which she investigates representations of nature, people and the urban environment, using deformed images taken from old photo albums.

2012 (Makino Takashi  / 2013 / HD + 3D / 30min)
The 3D effect is proof that our brains are unreliable, but also shows that we experience more than we actually see. Makino: ‘I expect 2012 can make free and new cosmos in each audience's mind.’
