Tough psychedelic garage punk
Stel, je zit net op een psychedelische garage trip en je krijgt honger... euh sorry... 'trek', zoals mijn moeder mij altijd verbeterde. Onder knallende psych punk garage klanken loop je naar het in allerlei kleuren kronkelende aanrecht in de keuken. 13th Floor Elevators, O Sees, Ty Segall, The Sonics en Jay Reatard achtervolgen je vanuit de speakers in de woonkamer. Op het fornuis en in je hoofd borrelt er van alles omhoog. Je opent de tuindeur en plukt een takje Yardbirds. In een keukenkastje staat een oud blikje Can, ook maar een scheutje van doen. En - wat zou het? - hoppa, een mespuntje XTC. Van de keukenvloer veeg je een restje Velvet Underground en uit een kruidenpotje met het label 'Mild Davis' verkruimel je nog een topje Miles Davis uit zijn jaren 70 electrische periode en klaar is de 'Witches Brew' van Frankie and the Witch Fingers.
En ondanks alle freaky ingrediënten serveer je een smaakvolle pot met uiterst catchy en rauwe psych-punk garage songs. Zo stel ik me het recept van Frankie & The Witch Fingers uit LA, Californië voor. Frankie is de kat van zanger/gitarist Dylan Sizemore, de 'Witch Fingers' zitten overduidelijk aan de handen van elke muzikant in de band.
FATWF is in 2013 opgericht in Bloomington, Indiana door gitarist Dylan Sizemore en drummer Glenn Brigman om een lading lo-fi psych punk songs van Sizemore op te nemen. Met de toevoeging van lead gitarist Josh Menashe en bassist Alex Bulli is de band volledig. De vier kennen elkaar dan al uit andere Bloomington bands, zoals Triptides en Prince Moondog. Op de eerste cassette 'Sidewalk' (2013) en de gelijknamige debuutplaat 'Frankie & The Witch Fingers' (2015) is voornamelijk rauwe psych punk garage te horen. De band is dan al in 2014 verhuist naar psych/garage epicentrum Los Angeles, met aanjagers als Ty Segall en Thee Oh Sees.

Er volgen nog meer platen, 'Heavy Roller' (2016), 'Brain Telephone' (2017), 'ZAM' (2019), 'Monsters Eating People Eating Monsters...' (2020), 'Data Doom' (2023) en heel, heel veel optredens. Vaak als headliner in kleine clubs, soms met bands als OFF!, Ty Segall, Oh Sees, Cheap Trick en ZZ Top. Op de opeenvolgende platen wordt het recept van FATWF verder uitgewerkt en worden de prog- en krautrock invloeden op organische wijze in de garage songs verwerkt. Het resultaat is een van energie barstend, stuiterend geheel, waarbij de inventieve riffjes en loopjes je om de oren vliegen. Op het podium een totale belevenis, zoals ook te horen op een aantal live platen, waarvan 'Live at KEXP' (2025) de laatste is.

Ondertussen is de line-up veranderd. Naast het oorspronkelijke duo Sizemore en Menashe vinden we nu drummer Nick Aguilar (ex-Slaughterhouse en Mike Watt), bassist Nikki Pickle (eerder in Vera met Death Valley Girls) en laatste aanwinst Jon Modaff (o.a. Hooveriii) op keyboards, terwijl hij in het verleden wel eens drummer is geweest tijdens een tour met FATWF. Modaff heeft een aanzienlijke rol op de nieuwste plaat 'Trash Classic' (2025). Wave invloeden en robotic Devo ritmes worden naadloos ingevoegd in de turbulente FATWF sound.

Vanaf 'Data Doom' sluipen thema’s als technologische dystopie, systemisch verval, sluipend fascisme en de afbrokkeling van de menselijkheid in de teksten van FATWF.
"There was no grand plan or lyrical theme settled ahead of the new album’s creation. “We collectively talk about what’s going on in the world when we’re in rehearsal and stuff, and our feelings about it,” says Sizemore. “I think it’s just at a point now where talking about certain things just feels more — what’s the word? — it feels more part of the zeitgeist." Na een ontmoeting met Jello Biafra gaat deze ook nog eens op een Halloween nacht samen met FATWF het podium op om een aantal Dead Kennedys klassiekers te spelen.
"He (Jello) answered in the affirmative, so Frankie and the Witch Fingers learned the Dead Kennedys’ “Halloween,” “Police Truck” and “Holiday in Cambodia.” Biafra rehearsed with the band at sound check, and for the holiday show FATWF dressed up as “bloody doctors.” As for Biafra? “He changed his outfit in between every song! He was throwing fake bloody organs at the audience. You could tell half of the audience knew who he was. And half was like, ‘Yo, who the hell is this?’”" (LA Times)
