How to Make a Documentary About How to Start a Band
On-Gaku: Our Sound
Luna Sterre van Heck, Dido Sernesky, Fréderique Comans / Kenji Iwaisawa | NL / JP | 2024 / 2019
A film by three aspiring filmmakers, driven by a deep appreciation for the Dutch alternative music scene. Luna Sterre van Heck, Dido Sernesky and Fréderique Comans shed an intimate light on the experiences of three musicians, each at a different point in their career. Berend Suijker is the bassist of Bowl, an up-and-coming band from Utrecht. Jaap van der Velde is part of The Homesick, a Frisian band that has played an influential role in the scene for over ten years. Cees Paris from Amsterdam left renowned indie band Personal Trainer to focus fully on his own project, Steve French. Interwoven with the journey of aspiring filmmakers, the film captures the highlights and challenges of starting new bands and music projects. Fun fact: all the artists in this film have performed at Vera. The filmmakers will be present for a Q&A.
After this we will screen On-Gaku: Our Sound: a 2019 Japanese animation and manga adaptation about a trio of high school students who start a rock-n-roll band with no experience. Almost entirely animated by director Kenji Iwaisawa (who worked on it for seven years) and featuring a lead performance by Japanese alt-rock legend Shintaro Sakamoto.
