Roxane Métayer is a violinist but above all a multidisciplinary artist who draws her inspiration mainly from nature. Born in France, but living in Brussels, she learned to play the violin at a young age. Later she developed herself as a visual artist, with drawings, videos and sculptures evoking timeless, slightly psychedelic worlds.
On her first solo LP ‘Éclipse des Ocelles’ (2021), Roxane Métayer explores the possibilities of violin, drones, field recordings and folk-like arrangements and melodies. At times she also uses minimal percussion, flutes, unexpected sound effects and occasionally vocals to broaden the sound palette. The results are layered, semi-improvised compositions that gradually unfold. On the most recent album ‘Chênes’ (2025), electronics and vocals have been given a more prominent role.
Roxane Métayer will perform a special quadraphonic set in VERA, over four speakers, where you can fully immerse yourself in her enchanting sound world of nature recordings and violin. In addition, a new cassette with a selection of the soundtracks she made for her video work will be released on Minorie and presented during this night.
De Vlaamse Primitieven is the alter ego of Antwerp guitarists Jan Boudart & Freek Vreys. After studying jazz guitar, they discovered a shared love for 60’s psychedelia, ethnic drones, minimalism and American ‘primitive’ guitar music by John Fahey, Robbie Basho, Glenn Jones and the like. They studied these masters and developed an obsession to not only keep this beautiful tradition of guitar playing alive, but also to mix ‘American primitivism’ with British folk (Bert Jansch!), jazz, drones and other genres. For some these may be somewhat obscure references, but the musicality and variation of the duo give the instrumentals of De Vlaamse Primitieven a surprising accessibility. It reminds us at times of the instrumental passages of well-known names such as Nick Drake and Joanna Newsom.
At the beginning of the year, debut album ‘Lucht van een Andere Planeet’ was released on Pang Pang Records (bel) & Carbon Records (usa). It was recorded by none other than Venediktos Tempelboom, who gave an impressive performance in VERA during the previous edition of Minorie in June.
Minorie is a record label from Groningen that explores the fringes of folk and experimental music.
