Capitalism gobbles up anything that goes against the norm, smooths it out and resells it. In Europe and North America, this has led to a version of drag that is presented primarily as commercial entertainment. While this form may contribute to the visibility of gender fluidity, it often fails to honor drag’s radical origins as an act of resistance against patriarchal, racist and capitalist structures.

Avant-Drag! changes that. This documentary follows ten Greek drag artists who take to public spaces with their flamboyant characters – from rebellious housewives to turbofolk divas – to question and subvert social norms. They combine political activism with creative expression, from promoting abortion rights to making children’s drawings.

Following the screening, there will be a Q&A session with Thanasis McMorait, one of the activist drag queens portrayed in the documentary.

This screening takes place in collaboration with Queer Pride Groningen. VERA Zienema is wheelchair accessible. Report to the front entrance, someone will pick you up and take you inside through the back entrance.
