SPOT X VERA PRESENT
Sunday 21 JuneSUNN O)))USA
Support: Natasa Grujovic & Steve Moore
Monumental heavy drone metal
This concert is a collaboration between SPOT and VERA, tickets are available only through the SPOT website. The concert will take place in the Grote Zaal of de Oosterpoort!
The American duo Sunn O))) was founded in Los Angeles in 1998 by guitarists Stephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson. Known for their impressive live shows, the band is coming to Groningen for a concert in which sound becomes almost tangible. Sunn O))) is renowned for their monumental heavy drone metal, where volume, resonance, and slowness are central elements.
Since their debut The Grimmrobe Demos (1999), Sunn O))) have explored the boundaries between metal, drone, minimalism, and experimental music. Their work connects heavy guitar music with influences from contemporary composition and jazz, among others. Over the years, the duo has collaborated with a wide range of artists, though the core remains the interplay between O’Malley and Anderson.
To mark their 25th anniversary, they return live to this foundation: an intense performance in which amplifiers, low frequencies, and slowly building riffs fill the space. Their concerts are known for the physical experience of sound, featuring deep drones, fog, and an overwhelming sonic landscape.
The duo Nataša Grujović and Steve Moore will perform as support this evening. In 2023, they began composing their first original works. While their music shares many elements with electroacoustic practices through the use of synthesizers and digital processing, the duo’s main strength lies in their use of resonance in acoustic spaces and within the instruments they play — accordion and trombone — to create harmonic fields.
