Het is weer eens zover! Animatie te Zienema en in een overdonderende hoeveelheid. Vooraf laten een aantal Groninger makers hun werk zien (waarover later meer), maar daarna animatie van verre – uit Seattle wel te verstaan. Maakster Tess Martin komt over om werk van SEAT (Seattle Experimental Animation Team) te vertonen. Een dame die zich bewust is van de bijzondere banden tussen Vera en haar stad en die bovendien nog ooit in Nederland gewoond heeft aan het begin van het millennium. SEAT is een los-vaste coalitie van filmmakers die werkelijk alle soorten animatie maken. Soms werken zij samen in allerlei projecten en anders vertonen zij werk in programma’s als die van vanavond.
En dan even over de technieken. Tess Martin zelf doet iets dat ik zelf nog nooit had gezien, maar dat verwant is aan een oeroude vorm van animatie – het schaduwspel (denk wajangpoppen). Zij verlicht haar uitgeknipte plaatjes van achteren. Amanda Moore gaat full wajang overigens. Maar tal van voorwerpen worden ook geanimeerd, van knikkers tot found footage. Er wordt natuurlijk ook volop getekend, in elk denkbaar medium. Maar zie vooral ook de volledige opsomming (in ’t Engels) hieronder.
Vooraf GREAT – waar dat voor staat? Gronings Experimentele/Eigenzinnige Animatie Team/Troep/Toom/Types? De avond zal het leren. In elk geval kunnen wij Olaf van Happy Ship verwachten, over hoe een klein kanon leert omgaan met zijn explosieve natuur als hij zijn dorpje verlaat en de wijde wereld intrekt. Ritueel van Maria van Driel (dat verrassende verbanden heeft met SEAT werk), en iets van Rozemarijn Tromp, waaronder wellicht ook nooit eerder vertoond werk. Het fraaie Mister Gloomy van Martine Rademakers wordt vertoond. En tot slot iets waar Noorderzongangers vorig jaar al van konden genieten, het ontroerende Vrienden maken van Studio Beeldstern, de ontwerpstudio van Annelies Stern, die sinds jaar en dag ook prachtige Verakranten verzorgt. En op de valreep kwam ook nog Palace for the Lost Ones van Richard Bolhuis & Erik Hendriks binnen, met muziek van House of Cosy Cushions! Kortom, komt dat zien!

Loopforms is a dance of energy or spirit expressed in ‘maximized loops’. A traditional narrative is omitted in favor of a sensual, emotionally affecting experience. Ink and pencil on paper.
7. Sarah Jane Lapp, Chronicles of a Professional Eulogist, 6:30 (from 26min film, 2009)
A eulogist in training interviews his mentor on the eve of war. India ink, wax and gouache on paper.
8. Clyde Petersen, The Dirty Street, 4:44, (2010)
A found footage film, recut, projected and rephotographed using the “Hipstamatic” app for iPhone one frame at a time. Music by Triumph of Lethargy Skinned Alive to Death. Footage: Jealousy – a Prelinger Archives film from the series Marriage for Moderns (1954).
9. Webster Crowell, Parasol, 8:30 (2008)
A short, quick revenge film about bicycles, dancing and speed; animated with pastels across the surface of a few thousand paper parasols.

In an Eden-like garden, cartoon deities sit upon mountaintops ready to trade gardening tips about their mountainside utopias. Hand-animated in Flash.
11. Salise Hughes, Somewhere, 4:00 (2010)
Somewhere between a 1950s sock hop and the Wild West, a Technicolor and black and white pair of lovers meet to belt out a tune from West Side Story. Found footage manipulated frame by frame.
