ZIENEMA ♥ HALLOWEEN
Tuesday 27 OctoberThe Fly
David Cronenberg, US 1986
Halloween is slowly creeping towards us, and at Zienema it’s beginning to itch. Don’t worry, not the kind of itch where strange, thick hairs are beginning to sprout from all over your body and fingernails fall off. Our genetic codes are, last time we checked, still intact and very human. But we are itching to throw another Halloween special, and the mood this year is gory. Very gory. We’re screening David Cronenberg’s The Fly.
Starring Jeff Goldblum in one of his most iconic roles, scientist Seth Brundle has created a teleportation machine. Two telepods that can transport inanimate objects from one to the other, although live tissue comes out horribly mutated. When he meets Veronica Quaife (Geena Davis), a science journalist, they make a deal after she comes home with him. She keeps the rights to tell this story when it’s ready to be shared with the world, and in exchange she will keep it a secret until then.
As their relationship evolves from professional to romantic, Seth has found a way to transport live tissue safely from one pod to the other. In his excitement, he decides to be the first human subject to try the teleportation machine. All would have gone just fine, had not another living being unknowingly entered the pod with him: a fly.
We encourage you all to dress up before you teleport over to the screening. Not a requirement, but an opportunity that would be a shame to miss in the spooky season. -Lucas
