Tuesday 1 JulyKeti Koti: Katibo Ye Ye
Frank Zichem, NL 2003
Please note: this film will start at 19:00
Clarence Breeveld, who was born in Suriname and lives in the Netherlands, wants to explore the places where his ancestors were traded as slaves. In collaboration with director Frank Zichem, he travels to Ghana to investigate how and where the slave trade took place. The gloomy dungeons and the ‘door of no return’ of Cape Coast Castle clearly give Breeveld a feeling of devastation. The meeting with the ‘key bearer’ of the powerful Ashanti king is also filled with emotions. All in all, a moving documentary that shows how the history of slavery is still interwoven with the present day.
After watching this documentary you can enjoy Surinamese snacks, followed by a panel discussion. The panel will share their emotions after watching this documentary, but also what Keti Koti means in a city like Groningen. Afterwards, you are also welcome to continue to the free follow-up program with spoken word by Michael ter Maat, an exhibition in the hall and DJ Lowpro in the basement. This film is part of the Keti Koti program in collaboration with BLOG (Black Ladies of Groningen)
