Musical accompaniment at the cinemas. Around 1910-1930 this was a normal course of events in the Netherlands. But with the advent of sound film, the so-called ’talkies’, this has become rather unusual. In a way this is a pity, because it provides the viewer a completely different cinema experience than what we are used to nowadays; the musician really turns the film into something of their own.

So let’s keep this old cinema tradition alive. The Zienema House Band, consisting of Julia Bekker (OOO, Potgrond) and Hugo Heinen (Atoomclub), will bring their own composition to Zienema. Together they will accompany the experimental horror film A Page Of Madness. The film is the product of an avant-garde group of artists in Japan known as the Shinkankakuha. With this film they wanted to oppose the over-representation of realistic cinema at the time. The result is a surreal nightmare from the silent film era.
