Early slowcore pioneers
Few bands have made slowness sound as powerful as Codeine. This will be their fifth appearance at the VERA Mainstage, a connection that goes all the way back to 1991. Formed in New York in the late ’80s, the trio became one of the most influential bands of the early slowcore movement, leaving a lasting mark on underground music despite their relatively short existence. There’s a quiet intensity to their music, where every note carries weight and melancholy never feels forced. Their stripped-down, emotionally raw sound paved the way for bands like Low and Duster, yet still feels completely their own.
After decades of silence, Codeine returned to the stage in 2023, bringing their haunting songs back to life. Along with their original records, the band has also revisited Dessau, a long-lost album recorded in 1992 and finally released by Numero Group. Thirty years on, Codeine’s music has lost none of its impact.
