For a band that thrives on collapse, it’s remarkable that this US/Japanese quartet is celebrating their 31st year. Deerhoof long ago established itself as one of themost furiously inventive rock groups alive. The quartet releases albums with the hunger of a young band, each exploring candy-coated hard-rock riffs, free-jazz percussion, sideways J-pop hooks, fearsome dissonance, social commentary, and surrealist humor. Fronted by Satomi Matsuzaki’s inimitable alto, their music is joyful and foreboding, cybernetic and deeply human, defined by paradox and defiant optimism.
