Gaye Su Akyol Turkije
Zangeres Gaye Su Akyol is geboren in Istanbul en haar album 'Hologram Imparatorlugu' bevat vele muzikale lijnen. Akyol heeft naar eigen zeggen net zo veel met de Turska diva Selda als met Joy Division, Nick Cave en Nirvana. Ze zingt Anatolisch en haar muziek bevat niet alleen een oed, oriëntaalse strijkers maar ook elektrische post-punk-achtige bassen, scheurend gitaarwerk en een flinke lading dansbare grooves & psychedelica.
Na een opleiding in antropologie kwam ze uiteindelijk als kunstenares in aanraking met de band Bubituzak en wist ze wat ze wilde doen, muziek maken. Samen namen ze het album Develerle Yaşıyorum op en tourden ze met een gemaskerde performance langs festivals in Europa waaronder Roskilde. Zelf noemt Akyol het ‘Turkish art rock’ en daar kunnen we het alleen maar mee eens zijn.

Istanbul-based painter-turned-singer Gaye Su Akyol is at the forefront of a burgeoning Turkish alternative music scene across the Black Sea Coast.
The 31-year-old musician’s debut album Develerle Yasiyorum (translated to ‘I’m living with camels’) fuses homegrown orthodoxy and Western avant-garde ingenuity. Her music balances modern rock composition with traditional Arabic-influenced Turkish songs. The delivery is an alluring, mind-expanding experience with just the right psychedelic twists!
Akyol’s captivating stage presence resembles a 1930s cabaret singer while the sway of her arms hypnotises the audience like a snake charmer with a cobra. She brings a fantastic live band with her – they’re all wearing masks to emphasise the mysterious nature of the music.
