Vanuit een buitenwijk in Chicago onderhoudt de negentienjarige studente Ala’a Basatneh een enorm online netwerk van revolutionairen in Syrië. Ze post demonstraties als Facebook-events, stippelt via Google Maps ontsnappingsroutes uit en zet opnames van demonstranten online. Via het internet staat ze activisten bij die ten strijde trekken met camera’s en ondanks het oplaaiende geweld blijven filmen om het laatste nieuws naar buiten te brengen. Terwijl de opstand voortduurt, doet de vraag zich voor welk middel het meest effectief is om een dictator te verdrijven: sociale media of een AK-47?

Based in a Chicago suburb, nineteen-year-old student Ala'a Basatneh is maintaining a vast online network of revolutionaries in Syria. She posts demonstrations as Facebook events, uses Google Maps to devise escape routes and posts video material shot by demonstrators online. She uses internet to assist the activists who do battle with their video cameras, and, despite the never-ending violence, she manages to show the latest news. As the revolt drags on, the question which weapon is more effective in dragging down a dictator becomes ever more urgent. Is it an AK-47 or social media?
