“De band Orkesta Mendoza uit Tucson, Arizona, wordt geleid door de multi-intrumentalist Sergio Mendoza. Ze staan bekend om hun mix van traditionele Latijns-Amerikaanse ritmes zoals cumbia en mambo met indie rock, psychedelische pop en bigband-blazers. Opgericht in 2009, is dit energieke collectief—vaak omschreven als “indie mambo”—sterk beïnvloed door de grenscultuur van Nogales (Arizona) en Sonora (Mexico), wat resulteert in een unieke, dansbare en “grensloze” sound.”

Tot zover de vooraankondiging voor Orkesta Mendoza, maar die laat toch wel het een ander buiten beschouwing. Bijvoorbeeld dat Sergia Mendoza al geruime tijd lid is van Calexico, geen onbelangrijke naam in de historie van Vera. Helemaal als je bedenkt dat Calexico voortkomt uit  Giant Sand, de band die met haar drie uur durende concerten stofwolken vol woestijnrock en americana door de zaal laat stuiven en daarmee in 1986 de Vera poll wint.

Maar het gaat nu natuurlijk om Orkesta Mendoza. De band die met haar prachtige songs de juiste balans weet te vinden tussen melancholische sixties coolness en tropische, feestelijke latin warmte. Perfect voor een podium in een bar op de verhitte set van een Robert Rodriguez/Quentin Tarantino film als ‘From Dusk Till Dawn’.

De sixties invloeden geven de band ook een soort van psychedelische garage vibe, zoals je die  terugvindt op de fameuze ‘Nuggets’ compilaties. Sergio Mendoza groeit op aan beide kanten van de grensstad Nogales en wordt daardoor beïnvloed door zowel mambo, cumbia en boogaloo als door rock en rock’n’roll.

“Yeah, I’m definitely a Rock’n’Roll fan,” he says, “but it’s in my DNA to have Mexican and South American styles in my music. In my head, though, Orkesta Mendoza is definitely a rock band.”

Aanvankelijk maakt hij in zijn schooltijd deel uit van een aantal rockbands, maar als hij op zijn 18e verhuist naar Tucson, Arizona herontdekt hij zijn latin roots, vooral door ‘La vida no vale nada’ (1976) van de Cubaanse zanger Pablo Milanés.

Tijdens een event voor de Artists and Musicians Healthcare Alliance in 2009 wordt Orkesta Mendoza geboren als Sergio Mendoza Y La Orkesta. Het is bedoeld als een éénmalige ode aan ‘Mambo king’ Pérez Prado, maar gelukkig zit Joey Burns van Calexico in het publiek, die totaal overdonderd is en Mendoza aanspoort met de band door te gaan. Dit resulteert in de eerste plaat van Orkesta Mendoza, ‘Mambo Mexicano’ (2012), mede geproduceerd door Joey Burns en Sergio Mendoza zelf.

“In 2012, Orkesta Mendoza released their debut, the hard-hitting Mambo Mexicano!—a love letter to Pérez Prado full of sweeping violins and rattling horns, as well as party-starting cha-cha-chá, cumbia, and ranchera, all of them tinged with psychedelia. ” (Bandcamp)

Mendoza gaat dan ook deel uit maken van Calexico, waardoor de volgende Orkesta Mendoza plaat pas in 2016 uitkomt, ¡Vamos A Guarachar!. Op de plaat vinden we een aantal gastmuzikanten terug, onder andere de Mexicaanse elektronica pionier Camilo Lara en zanger Quetzal Guerrero als ook Joey Burns en John Convertino van Calexico.

“Folks south of the border, the one where Trump wants to build a wall, get vexed when “America” is taken as a synonym for the US – the place is a continent, they too are Americans! It’s a point made forcefully by this second album from polymath Sergio Mendoza, best known as part of Arizona band Calexico. Na de EP ‘La Caminadora’ (2018) volgt de voorlopig laatste plaat ‘Curandero’(2020) met weer vele gastbijdragen. Alle platen hebben overigens prachtige stijlvolle, kleurrijke sixties aandoende hoezen. alleen daarom al het aanschaffen waard.

““Originally it was going to be just the band, but it turned into our collaboration album! As we recorded, I kept hearing different voices for the tracks. I knew I wanted Nick, then Joey Burns of Calexico (Mendoza is a longtime member of the band) was just right for guitar and bass on “No Te Esperaba” which also features Chetes from the legendary Mexican rock band Zurdok.”

He even recruited the renowned Spanish singer Amparo Sánchez, who brought her fiery magic to heat up “Boogaloo Arizona,” a track that could almost be Curandero’s clarion call.” (Bandcamp)

“Border music without borders” is het motto van de band, die oproept tot verbinding.

“Today, discriminatory sentiments have coincided with Donald Trump’s rise to power. “He’s bringing out racism in a lot of people,” Mendoza says. “It’s like almost okay to be a racist because of Donald Trump.” The way forward, Mendoza says, is to, “see each other as people, and not judge based on color. That is why I feel like we need to sing and dance to the music that is in my blood—and to do it here in Arizona, where there is always political tension in regards to the border.”” (Bandcamp)

Het concert van Romperayo is net geweest en later in het jaar volgen nog meer latin klanken in Vera van Los Pirañas. Maar in tegenstelling tot de meer minimal instrumentale gekte van deze Colombiaanse bands, staat er met Orkesta Mendoza een wijds georkestreerde band van vaak acht leden op het podium, waarbij de fantastische zang en samenzang de songs naar een nog hoger niveau tillen. Uitbundig, hartverwarmend en ultracool.
