John Waters geeft een eigenzinnige draai aan de jaren ‘50 nostalgie in Cry-Baby, zijn muzikale hommage aan Rebel Without a Cause en Romeo and Juliet. De musical speelt zich af in Baltimore, 1954 aan de wieg van rock & roll. De tienercultuur is verdeeld in drie kampen: de stoere Drapes, de kakkerige Squares en de nerds. Johnny Depp is Wade "Cry-Baby" Walker, een charismatische bad boy en leider van de Drapes. Een permanente traan op zijn wang herinnert hem aan een jeugdtrauma. De Drapes en Squares bestrijden elkaar zo’n beetje iedere dag en de boel escaleert als Wade zijn tranende oog laat vallen op het Square-meisje Allison. Haar doorsnee vriendje, leider van de Squares, doet er uiteraard alles aan om deze verboden liefde te laten mislukken. Met Cry-Baby maakte John ‘Pope of Trash’ Waters een geestige en uitzinnige parodie op musicals en tienerrebellenfilms met een diverse cast (ook Iggy Pop werd gestrikt) en een energieke rock & roll soundtrack.

 

John Waters gives a one-of-a-kind twist to 1950s nostalgia in Cry-Baby, his musical homage to Rebel Without a Cause and Romeo and Juliet. The musical, like so many of his movies, is set in Baltimore; this time it’s 1954 and rock & roll is about to take off with a vengeance. The teen scene is divided into three groups: the ultracool  Drapes, the preppy Squares and the nerds. Johnny Depp is Wade ‘Cry-Baby’ Walker, a charismatic bad boy and leader of the Drapes. His cheek is permanently decorated with a tear reminding of a youthful tragedy. The Drapes and Squares are at each other’s throats on a daily basis, but it’s when Wade casts a tearful eye on a young Square lady named Allison that matters really come to a head. Of course her steady boyfriend, the leader of the Squares, does everything within his power to thwart this forbidden love. With Cry-Baby, John ‘Pope of Trash’ Waters managed to make an extremely funny and over-the-top parody of musicals and teen rebellion flicks, with a cast ranging from Iggy Pop to such diverse women as Traci Lords and Ricki Lake, and with a soundtrack brimming with rock & roll.
