As the Palaces Burn: Lamb of God (Don Argott, VS 2013) [English version below]
Don Argott (Last Days Here) begint zijn nieuwe film als een portret van de Amerikaanse heavymetalband Lamb of God. Reflecties van de sympathieke bandleden op hun leven en hun muziek worden afgewisseld met beelden van concerten over de hele wereld: gierende gitaren, grommende keelklanken en headbangende massa’s van Colombia tot India. En dan landt de band in Praag en neemt de film een bizarre wending. Twee jaar eerder overleed een Tsjechische fan aan de gevolgen van een val van het podium. Nu wordt zanger Randy Blythe gearresteerd op verdenking van doodslag. De band is in shock. Zowel vanwege de tragische dood van een fan als uit bezorgdheid om de wat labiele Blythe. De tweede helft van de film geeft een mooie impressie van de emotionele impact die de rechtszaak heeft op Blythe en zijn vrienden. In voice-over geven ze commentaar op de zaak en de relatie met hun fans. Het is een onverwacht gevoelige kijk op een scene die vaak geassocieerd wordt met geweld.
Don Argott (Last Days Here) begins his movie as a straightforward portrait of the heavy metal band Lamb of God. The easy-going musicians’ reflections on their life and music are mixed with material shot at gigs across the globe: screeching guitars, throat-rumbling vocals and headbanging crowds from Colombia to India. But when the band hits Prague, events take a totally unexpected turn. Two years prior to this visit, a Czech fan died of the consequences of tumbling from the stage at a Lamb of God gig. Singer Randy Blythe is arrested on manslaughter charges. The band is in total shock. Not only are they shaken by the death of a fan, but they are also worried about the mental state of the somewhat psychologically erratic Blythe. The second half of the documentary provides an excellent insight into the emotional impact that the court case has on Blythe and his friends. Voice-overs are used to let them comment on the case and their relationship with their fans. Although the metal scene is often associated with violence, this movie provides an especially sensitive take on it and its fans and bands.
