“Somewhere out there, in the multiverse of infinite possibilities, exists a world where the Beatles recorded "Helter Skelter," decided to stop cutting their hair, and never looked back. While that world might only be a dream, the next best thing comes by way of Cambridge, England's Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats, a band whose psychedelic proto-metal excursions evoke the melody of a Fab Four fronted by Charles Manson, along with the creeping menace of early Black Sabbath.”

Ook zie ik ergens een omschrijving als “the original Alice Cooper band jamming in a cell with early Black Sabbath and the Stooges".

“Dave Murray from Iron Maiden is a huge one. When I was younger, I just wanted to be him. I had everything set up the same, a Strat with two humbuckers and the whole kit. Peter Green from Fleetwood Mac is, to me, the best British guitarist of all time—better than Clapton and Page. Jeff Beck and Peter Green are neck-and-neck in my book. It was all of that old hard rock and metal and trying to copy those guys that really improved my lead playing.” (Interview Kevin Starrs in Premier Guitar)

“Though Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats play music inspired by late-’60s metal bands, frontman Kevin Starrs takes his timbral cues from Neil Young. “He’s got the best guitar tone I’d ever heard,” says Starrs, “and I immediately set off on copying it after seeing him.””(Premier Guitar)

“That’s exactly why I use a tweed Deluxe! Seeing Neil live was what started that for me. He’s got the best guitar tone I’d ever heard and I immediately set off on copying it after seeing him. He was selling off a few amps in that same auction last year, but I just picked up the acoustic. I figure you can’t beat having a guitar that he may have written something on. For the basic rhythm tracks, I just plugged straight into the amp. I have a few different fuzz pedals I used once I started building up second guitar parts and lead parts.”

“The production is very hot in the mix. It sort of reminds me of Raw Power by The Stooges and You're Living All Over Me by Dinosaur. There is definately a d.i.y. vibe going on. All instruments are fat sounding and audible. The guitars spew out juicy doom-style riff after riff in the vein of Ozzy Sabbath and Thin Lizzy, with AMAZING solos coming at your eardrums constantly. Uncle Acid is most certainly a mega maestro at his instrument, and his guitar clips the red EQ throughout Blood Lust. The majority of this LP was recorded on an old tape machine that Iron Maiden supposedly recorded their first demo onto, making the retro-vibe more prominent.” (Metal Archives over ‘Blood Lust’)

“The most distinct and most important part of this album/band is indeed Uncle Acid's vocals, which sound like John Lennon's on "I Am The Walrus" if John Lennon was a vampire instead of a walrus. Its one of those vocal styles that you never forget, and can make you recognize this band instantly. His eerie falsetto sneaks and creeps around like Nosferatu's shadow coming up the stairs to eat your neck. A sense of melody makes the vocals memorable ones that get stuck in your head, rather than the sometimes traditional boring doom kind. Its these vocals that really are the crowning jewel on this LP…” (Metal Archives over ‘Blood Lust’)

“This is what I was up to during lockdown. It’s inspired by seventies Italian murder-mystery cinema, the giallo genre [which comes from pulp paperbacks]. Years ago I got into forties and fifties film noir and somehow moved on to the Italian stuff, which is quite wild, sexual and horrific, and features a lot of detective work and shadowy figures. It was a psychedelic version of film noir. I’d always wanted to do a soundtrack sort of thing, but expand on the idea, so writing a script, recording dialogue and having sound effects included. This was my opportunity.” (Kevin Starrs in Louder Sound)

Dikkie.
