In this Chilean neo-western the suffocating nature of the Atacama Desert sets the tone. The harsh landscape harbors a secret mine operated by Pacífico, a stubborn patriarch who is injured and must leave his life’s work to his young daughter Carola. Unexpectedly, she is thrown into the deep end and must claim her place in a world full of suspicion, machismo and undercurrent threats.

Cameraman Sergio Armstrong, known for his work with Pablo Larraín (Ema and Neruda, a.o.), brings the harsh environment to life with sweeping shots that both suffocate and captivate. Bitter Gold is not only visually strong, however, it is also a subtle reflection on power dynamics within patriarchal structures.
