Live music returns to Zienema with the screening of Man With a Movie Camera. We welcome back Julia Bekker and Hugo Heinen to create their own experimental soundtrack for this classic.

Dziga Vertov’s influential 1929 film recorded daily urban life in the new Soviet era, the time of the utopian strive for the ‘New Man and New Woman’. We see imagery from Odesa to Kiev to Moscow, going through the different stages of their daily cycles. Like an organism coming to life, the urban areas evolve from near stillness in the early morning to the energetic city bustle of the day and evening. Without any words or clear narrative, the film evolves with it into a grandiose convergence of movement, light and, in our case, live soundtrack.

Man With a Movie Camera is a film that still can’t be categorized today, almost a century later. Its unscripted, experimental nature and seamless way of bringing machinery and human life in the modern age together still inspires filmmakers and audiences alike. –Lucas
